Have been working on the new Grim Cellar at Blogspot this afternoon and I'm really impressed with the level of control you have (much greater than expected) - check it out and comment if you like (only one post so far): http://thegrimcellar.blogspot.com/

Just saw your comments, John - the same happened with Colin's. I used to get an email when a new comment appeared but now it just wanders into the waiting-for-approval page so I don't even know it's there unless I happen to look! Anyway, they're now posted. I'm toying with shifting my page to Blogspot in light of the eventual disappearance of Filmjournal.

This phenomenon does seem to occur from time to time - it's always a good idea to sift through the spam before it grows to the point where it's a chore.
Of course it's also possibe people have just been offline and haven't noticed comments.

Now it could be that they are plain being ignored, which is fine, but I've made a couple of comments recently which I fancy have disappeared into the Filmjournal spam trap - if you've posted recently and are disappointed by the lack of response, it might be worth checking your spam...

The upgrade and migration path is looking to be a major nightmare unfortunately :( WP has changed a little too much to give us a smooth way of upgrading.

Therefore I'm resigned to a change of plan:

1. FilmJournal will continue to exist as it does now
2. Blogs @ The Digital Fix will launch as part of our relaunch next year
3. If you want to migrate your content, I will attempt to copy all of the images to the new site allowing you to attempt to bring your content over.

In terms of linkage with The Digital Fix, I will keep the FilmJournal posts included alongside the Blogs posts for now, but the top rotation will almost certainly feature only posts in Blogs @ The Digital Fix as of next year.

Just a quick update - sorry for the wooliness of my answers - most of them are 'don't knows' but I'll be trying to migrate EVERYTHING over :)

In the interim, FilmJournal articles are now included in the top headline banner too at http://www.thedigitalfix.com. This allows us to highlight specific articles that stand out.

Is there anyone who would be interested in managing this - it would just be a quick update every time you see a REALLY good blog post that adds the title, link and a suitable 500x200 image to display in the top banner. It's really really easy so would someone be willing to do this?

Can you not normally just export the entire blog via 'Manage ---> Export' and that exports pretty much everything apart from images as an XML file? I usually run an export after each posting (not that that happens very often) just in case the plug is pulled, and I guess on that note a heads up on specific closing dates would be appreciated once you know.

My apologies for being less involved in recent months - nothing against FJ, and I've never done it for the hits or love, obviously, just real life bobbins creeping in, even though I often find myself watching something - or contemplating a box set - with a view to writing about it on my Film Journal.

What Colin says certainly looks like a nice way to go, however, if I'm correct in envisaging something along the lines of Gaming and Television @ Digital Fix where it's accessible via a tab at the top of whichever Digital Fix area you're in and from there you get the lovely, clean interface those sites use these days. I hope I'm right in assuming this is what lies ahead - it seems that as it stands, Film Journal is like the lost, forgotten brother of the old DVD Times family, visited only by those who remember it...

Be good to see some activity regards the blogs. I'd hate to see Filmjournal continue the long slow death it's been suffering. Other than a few of us persisting with it the whole thing seems to be as dead as the dodo. I dare say the blogs get read by a handful of people at most (comments seems to be just a core circle of people). It all needs a push. There is some very good writing and some inciteful comments in there, hate to see it go to waste.

Moving blogs - honest answer is I don't know right now - I've got the new Wordpress running and am just starting to test things out on it. Hope to know more on this soon but I want it to be as painless as possible, even if that means I have to hack something together!

Prominence - I am planning to highlight certain blog posts in the top roller on the front page and we're actually sketching out plans for a new front page that would give ALL sections equal exposure and prominence. Depending on how quickly this goes we may launch with things as they are but changes are coming

URLs will be blogs.thedigitalfix.com/blogname - HOWEVER, we'll be adding the ability to have your own domain name pointing to the blog and we'll have many more possible themes than we have on FilmJournal.

Sounds interesting. A couple of quick questions I have, just out of general curiosity, to which there may or may not be answers:

How easy will it be to move blogs over? Is there a handy "move everything" button, or is it a lot of copying & pasting?

Will the blogs be given any more prominence on the Digital Fix front page? They're rather far down thanks to the 10 items about Music/Home Cinema/Cinema, and not currently linked on the top menu either.

What will the URLs be? e.g. blogs.thedigitalfix.com/blogname, blogname.thedigitalfix.com ...?

OK after some months of uncertainty, I've made some decisions about the future of FilmJournal - it's going to close...

HOWEVER, in its place I will be launching Blogs @ The Digital Fix - this will be live within the next couple of months on the most recent version of Wordpress and we'll run the two sites in tandem to give users the chance move to The Digital Fix (or another platform entirely) if they wish to. Blogs @ The Digital Fix will have a wider remit than the current FJ site but I hope it will be even more successful.

I envisage that we'll stop new posts being added to FilmJournal when Blogs @ The Digital Fix opens with an aim to closing the site totally at the end of 2011. We will also be looking into content archival for any blogs that aren't migrated to ensure that the writing remains visible.

I WILL be needing someone to take the reigns of the new Digital Fix centric blogs - effectively just keeping an eye on things and hiding any blogs that may be inappropriate and maybe picking the odd post or blog to highlight. It'll all be simple stuff so no need to worry about the complexities - is there anyone interested?

Blogs @ The Digital Fix will have a soft launch (much like the recent gaming section did) which will allow those 'in the know' to start using the site as early as possible to highlight bugs before it officially opens.

I will be posting full timelines for the plans here as soon as I can.

I agree that hits emanating from the main Digital Fix page are negligible at best; that may be down to the location of the links compared to the, literally, higher profile on the old DVD Times site, or it may be that the visitors to the site are no longer the ones who are interested in filmjournal posts.

Personally, I find that Twitter and various sites that have linked to me, or vice-versa, provide the bulk of my hits these days.

I agree with everyone's thoughts above, and it would be a shame to disband the FilmJournal community. But unless someone has the time and technical skills to drive it forward, then I wonder if it would be better to simply wind it up and allow people to transfer their content elsewhere. Perhaps a forum could be set up to allow FilmJournal bods to keep in touch, post links to new posts, etc?
